Drew Thomson was reappointed to the Foundation Board by the other directors in February 2022, and is currently serving his second 2-year term as a director. Drew has also served as the Chair of the Foundation’s Finance, Audit & Risk Management Committee since his first appointment in 2020.

Drew has brought to the Foundation a wealth of experience in accounting, financial and investment matters, as well as the legal sector in general. His combined experiences have already contributed greatly to the board’s financial oversight role and to the internal policies and procedures of the Foundation.

Drew has over 30 years of experience leading finance and accounting groups in the private and public sectors. Before joining the Foundation Board, he served for over a decade as the CFO of the Law Society of Alberta and the Alberta Lawyers Insurance Association – the regulator of the legal profession in Alberta and provider of professional liability insurance to Alberta lawyers, respectively. While at the Law Society, Drew developed and led the annual business planning and budgeting process and implemented enhanced financial information reporting for the senior management, audit committees and boards of both organizations. He also oversaw the regulatory reporting processes for the organization’s professional liability insurance program. Prior to this, Drew was engaged in senior financial management roles in the retail and radio and television broadcasting industries.

Continually active in the Alberta community, Drew has served on several boards and committees including the Certified Management Accountants of Alberta, Goodwill Industries Alberta, Windmill Microlending, Carbon Management Canada Research Institutes, the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education as well as the Alberta Law Foundation. Drew is an FCPA and FCMA and holds an MBA from Athabasca University and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Alberta. He currently resides in Edmonton and has become expert at conducting board and committee business remotely.
