Organizational Capacity Building Fund-Special Grant Call

The Alberta Law Foundation (the Foundation) has established an Organizational Capacity Building Fund (the Fund)  in the amount of $1,000,000 for a one-year period to support capacity-building efforts for current Foundation grantees, particularly as they relate to building knowledge and skills to elevate organizational capacity.

Who Can Apply

The Fund is open to organizations that currently operate a program or project funded by the Alberta Law Foundation.

Grant Amount

The maximum amount available for each project is $25,000.

Use of Funds

Funds are intended for initiatives that will strengthen the effectiveness of an organization’s governance or operations, so that its outcomes can be improved and sustained over time and the organization is equipped to better respond to the changing needs of Albertans.

The Foundation seeks proposals for one-time projects where funds may be granted for any of the following purposes:

  1. Organizational Governance
  2. Strategic Planning
  3. Board Development
  4. Succession Planning
  5. Truth and Reconciliation and its Calls to Action
  6. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
  7. Program Evaluation

 Call for Applications and Deadlines

Applications will be accepted for a one-year period starting on October 2, 2023.

Applications may be submitted at any time throughout the year up to and including September 30, 2024.

Grant Application Evaluation Criteria

Grant applications will be assessed using the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated Need: Organizations should demonstrate a clear need for the project that addresses the challenges or issues experienced by the organization as it relates to capacity-building efforts. Projects should respond to one of the following needs:
    • Strengthen organizational effectiveness and governance
    • Increase program impact
    • Respond to emerging issues and trends that are impacting your organization
  • Project Viability: The proposed project should have a well-defined work plan, budget and timeline, with achievable and measurable deliverables. The project should also clearly demonstrate how the work completed will contribute to outcomes that are improved and sustained over time.
  • Budget Explanation: If requests are for contracted work, the applicant must provide the proposal/workplan that was provided by the consultant. The Foundation may request additional quotes for contracted work, if deemed necessary in its review of the application.
  • Time Frame: Project work must be completed within 12 months after the date the grant is approved.

Step 2: Foundation staff will review the information in the inquiry form and advise you of the next steps. Project proposals aligned with the Fund will be invited to complete a written application on the Alberta Law Foundation Grant Portal.

If you have any questions about how to apply, please contact the Foundation before submitting.

The application will ask for the following information:

  1. Name of project;
  2. Start and end dates for the project;
  3. Amount requested from the Foundation and total project cost;
  4. The needs that the project will address and how they were identified;
  5. How the project enhances your organization’s ability to achieve its mandate;
  6. Project development plan including a timeline for actions and milestones;
  7. List of activities or deliverables that the project will achieve;
  8. How the project will strengthen the effectiveness of your organization’s governance or operations so that the organization’s outcomes are improved and sustained over time;
  9. Project funding strategy, including any other funds that may be contributed to the project;
  10. Detailed budget. If the application relates to contracted services, applicants will be required submit the proposal/workplan that was provided by the consultant. The Foundation may request additional quotes for contracted work, if deemed necessary in its review of the application;

Note: This application process does not include a draft application stage. The Foundation will not provide comments/feedback on grant applications.

Future Considerations for Successful Applicants


Final Report that details the project deliverables, project funding strategy and budget reconciliation (due one month after project completion).
