On May 8, 2025, Bill 39 and the amendments to the Legal Profession Act passed third reading in the Alberta Legislature. While we are disappointed by this outcome, the Alberta Law Foundation remains steadfast in its purpose: to advance access and equity in systems of law and justice for all in Alberta and in upholding the independence of Alberta’s legal system.
Throughout this process, the Foundation has worked diligently to represent the interests of the legal community, the access to justice sector, and the broader network of organizations that we support. While the legislation is now in effect, our role remains unchanged: we will continue to support our grantees, steward funds responsibly, and speak up on behalf of the communities and organizations we serve.
Moving forward, we are working constructively with the Ministry of Justice to maintain the rigour, integrity and fairness of our granting processes and ensure that funding decisions continue to reflect our values of transparency and accountability.
We are grateful to our partners and supporters across the province and look forward to continuing this important work together, alongside our grantees, our broader community, and the Government of Alberta.
