March 23, 2026
As Chair of the Alberta Law Foundation Board of Directors, I am writing to share a progress update on the Foundation’s operations and the positive momentum we have achieved over the past two months.
So far in 2026, we have received 27 grant applications representing 18 unique organizations across Alberta, with approximately $13.7 million in total funding requested. Of these applications, 17 have been approved, with $6.5 million in funding approved, and 10 applications are currently in the review process. This volume of applications and approvals is consistent with historical patterns.
All grants that have been approved have had their payments made on time, without delay or disruption.
Work is ongoing to complete the current intake review cycle while continuing to correct deficiencies in previous governance, policies, funding strategies, operational processes, culture and values, key relationships, and performance reporting.
I want to express my deep appreciation to my fellow Board members, whose dedication and hard work during this challenging period has been extraordinary. I also want to recognize the Law Society of Alberta and the Government of Alberta for their partnership and support as we work to strengthen the Foundation’s operations and impact.
As we continue this transition, I will provide regular updates on our progress. If you have questions or would like more information about the Foundation’s work, please contact us at grants@albertalawfoundation.org.
Thank you for your continued confidence in the Alberta Law Foundation.
Shamsher Kothari, K.C.
